Within Newport City Council, Social Services Department and to work in social care you need to be good at practical tasks as well as providing emotional support to people at difficult times. You must be trustworthy, reliable, patient and committed to helping people live as independently as they can. Working in social care requires sound values which promote dignity, respect and choice.
There are different areas that you can work in:
Adult services - You can work with older people in residential and day care, mental health day care service, people with learning disabilities living in their own home/day services or in home care. Social work assistants
Children services – You can work as a social work assistant, family support worker and family contact workers, residential workers (children in the looked after system/children with disabilities),
In residential care it is over a 24 hour period. Normally 3 shift patterns mornings, evening and night shift. 7 days a week/24 hours a day. Provide support and assistance with eating/mobility/washing/dressing. Providing activities, monitoring individual health and reporting to a manager, if concerned. Helping individuals to live as independently as possible.
In day care - you will be required to work Monday to Friday and no weekends/bank holidays. You will pick up service users in Newport City Council transport and bring back to the day centre. Some will make their own way to the day centre. This service support carers with respite and also enables individuals to meet with others, participate in a range of social and leisure activities and receive personal care to meet their needs
Social Worker - As a social worker you would be working full time, Monday- Friday, helping individuals, families and carers to be as independent as possible, whilst protecting them from harm when necessary. You would be working with other professionals to ensure individuals are protected and receive the right support to meet their needs.
